How To Test IGBT Module

As I have shown you how to test thyristor module with 12v battery and 12v bulb, you can also test an IGBT module as well with with slight difference.

Though unlike Thyristor, IGBT can easly be tested with a DMM leads as you test transistors.

For IGBT singles, that is the ones with three pins like normal Mosfet and transistor, you can test those ones as you test normal Mosfets like IRFP260N. Example of IGBT singles are commonly known with Fairchild Semiconductor which are:

FGH40N60SMDF

FGH40N60UFD

FGY75N60SMD

There are also single high current/wattage modules. A pair of these types must be use in one inverter no matter how big they are.

The diagrams below show how you can test IGBT module with bulb and battery. While it is a better tester is that as far as disassembled Module are concerned, some modules proves normal with meter (DMM). I have not seen an IGBT module that failed this test and then it works! They are not good when they fail this type of test. See the testing diagrams bellow:

 The above diagram is C1 i.e Collector 1 testing while the diagram below is C2 testing.

When you close the switch, the bulb lights up full and it goes off if you release the switch. The 10k resistor from battery positive makes sure the IGBT does not conduct falsely.

C2E1 - E2 - C1 and E1,G1 - E2,G2 are all labelled boldly on their corresponding terminals.
